The students of the University of Calabar (Unical) have appealed to Gov. Benedict Ayade of Cross River to assist one of them, Orim Peter, who is suffering from an infection of the liver.
The students from the institution’s Faculty of Law made the appeal on Monday at the main gate to the Government House in Calabar.
They pleaded with the state government to assist in footing the bills for the treatment of Peter, their sick course-mate.
Their spokesperson, Hilary Bisong, told newsmen that they had earlier sent a letter to the governor where they explained Peter’s health challenges.
He said that they had expected a response from him.
“We need the governor now to come to our aid, to save one of our own, Orim Peter from Obudu Local Government Area of Cross River, so that we will continue to support him as we have always done.
“The university is also trying to do something to save Peter’s life but it is slow; we can’t be waiting for them.
“ Peter’s case is serious and needs urgent attention if we must save his life.
“The students have tried their best by donating voluntarily but as we all know, that is not enough to help him.
“Some of us have exams to write but we are ready to perform poorly in the exams as long as we save Peter,’’ Bisong said.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Student Affairs and Youth Mobilisation, Prince Michael Nku-Abuo, assured the students that the governor would be willing to support Peter’s treatment.
“You are assured of the governor’s support but I request an official document containing details of your appeal.
“The welfare and security of the indigenes of Cross Rivers State are parts of the priorities of the Ayade’s-led administration,’’ he said.
