Politics Nigeria: In Nigeria, there are several illegal ways through which one can acquire their certificates. Some buy from illegal vendors while some engage them selves in different forms of certificate forgery. Many politicians are involved in this act, some of them acquire the certificates so as to be qualified to attain their desired positions. Accusing fingers have been pointed to some of them in the past. Some confessed to engaging in the illegal act while some denied abruptly. Recently, the Finance minister, Kemi Adeosun was involved in a similar case, this write up highlights some of the prominent Nigerian politicians who were involved in certificate scandals in the past. Some of these cases are still lingering.
#1 Salisu Buhari
He was impeach as the speaker of the house of representatives in 1999 for certificate forgery. Salisu was successfully elected as the number four citizen of the country, but Nigerians were not aware that he was not qualified for the position. News Magazine in their publications stated that Salisu Buhari did not attend University of Toronto as he claimed talkless of graduating. This created a lot of tension in the House of representative. Salisu Buhari threatened to sue the News Magazine but their claims and evidences were concrete enough for them to fret. University of Toronto denied the claims by Salisu Buhari stating that he was never a student of the school. After much pressure, Salisu Buhari confessed and apologized to the entire country for forging both his age and certificate. This was followed by his resignation. This remains arguably the most shameful certificates scandal in Nigeria.
#2 Dino Melaye
Dino, one of the youngest senators in the Nigerian senate is currently battling a certificate scandal case label against him by Sahara reporters. He is very controversial in Nigerian politics. Sahara reporters reported that Dino Melaye sis not graduate from the Ahmadu Bello University, Harvard university and the London school of economics as claimed by him. This report infuriated Sino Melaye. The Senate, on hearing about this decided to forward the case to the Senate committee on ethics, privileges and public petitions.
Harvard university and the London school of economics made it known that Dino Melaye was never a student of their school. This case is still lingering, it is bound to be one of the most lingering certificates scandal in Nigeria and Nigerians are eagerly awaiting the outcome.
#3 President Muhammadu Buhari
Even the incumbent president is not left out of this certificate scandal saga. Prior to his elections as the president in 2015, a cross section of Nigerians and the PDP accused Buhari of not being qualified to contest for the office of the President. They said that he does not have the O’ level certificate. A lawyer Mr. Nnamdi Nwokocha-Alaibe wrote a petition that Buhari be disqualified from contesting for the presidential seat. He stated that Buhari did not sit for the Cambridge WAEC as he claimed. Buhari in his response defended himself by stating that he attended the Provincial secondary school, Katsina with Late General Shehu Yar’adua. He disclaimed that he did not forge his certificate by saying that he sat for the Cambridge O’ level examination with exam number 8280002 which he passed. The retired army general also went ahead to submit an affidavit to INEC that all his academic credentials are with the Nigerian military. The Army then issued a disclaimer that the statement of results or the certified true copy of Buhari’s certificates are not with them. This remains one of the most inconclusive certificates scandal in Nigeria
The case lingered until the retired Army general was sworn into office as the a president in 2015. In June 2016, the Abuja Federal high court adjourned the case indefinitely but leaving Nigerians with doubts as to whether their president is innocent of the accusations.
#4 Bola Tinubu:
Tinubu is currently the national leader of the All progressive congress, APC. His influence in politics in Nigeria has paved way for many Governors and ministers in the south west. He is a strategic kingmaker in the southwest. In 1999, Tinubu was involved in a certificates scandal in Nigeria. One Dr. Waliu Balogun wrote a petition against him stating that his claims of attending the Chicago state university was false. He also stated that Tinubu did not take part in the compulsory National youth service corps (NYSC) exercise. This came during the electioneering process for the 1999 elections in which Tinubu emerged as the Governor of Lagos state. Tinubu submitted an affidavit to INEC and claimed that he lost his certificates when he went on exile between 1994 and 1998. The affidavit according to the petition written by Dr. Balogun was false. Tinubu dismissed the allegations as “baseless, wicked and unfortunate”. He later was forced to present the original copies of his certificates.
