Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State on Thursday enjoined members of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to be in the vanguard of promoting national unity in line with the fundamental objective of the scheme.
Tambuwal made the call at the inauguration of the 2018 batch ‘B’ stream 2, joint orientation exercise at Wamakko NYSC Orientation Camp in Sokoto State.
Represented by the state Head of Service, Dr Buhari Bello, the governor said the scheme had over the years played a vital role in enhancing national integration, social, cultural and physical developments of Nigeria, urging the corps members to sustain the tempo.
He advised the corps members to imbibe discipline and promote tolerance and understanding among all Nigerians in addition to their becoming change agents that will solve the nation’s problems and challenges.
He further counselled the corps members to uphold good morals imbibed during their training, interact freely and initiate viable community projects that will improve the living conditions of people in their places of primary assignment.
“The nation is faced with enormous challenges of development and meeting them needs collective efforts, ’’ Tambuwal said.
Also speaking, the Chairman of NYSC Governing Board in Sokoto State, Alhaji Abubakar Ladan, said corps members had demonstrated exemplary conducts during the orientation exercise, expressing the hope that they will not relent in their endeavours.
Ladan urged the corps members to join forces with government in fighting corruption, drug abuse and other social vices in the country.
He said distinguished corps members would receive awards from state government and Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar at the end of their one-year service, stressing that sanction is also awaiting any person found wanting.
The Coordinator of NYSC in the state,Mr Philip Enuabere, said 1,727 corps members were posted to Sokoto and 546 to Kebbi for the joint camp orientation, totalling 2,273.
He commended Sokoto Government for the physical rehabilitation of the orientation camp and other logistical supports towards a successful joint orientation exercise in the state.
Enuabere explained that the joint camp orientation was a strategy adopted to ensure prudence in the management of available resources.
The coordinator said the corps members would be in the states to understand cultural values, have knowledge of the environment different from theirs, so as to inculcate in them sense of patriotism.
Enuabere said that the exercise would prepare them for future challenges in accordance with government’s intention to inculcate moral discipline and foster unity.
He enjoined government ministries, agencies and private organisations to give decent accommodation and warm reception to the corps members posted for their primary assignments.
