Lauretta Onochie, a presidential aide has told the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Walter Onnoghen to take his pills and stop insulting Nigeria’s legal system.
Onnoghen who has been suspended by the presidency was absent from the Tuesday’s proceedings of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, where he has been charged with six counts of non-declaration of assets.
In his explanation to the three-man Bench of the CCT, his lawyer, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), said the suspended CJN developed a toothache which needed to be treated urgently.
To justify the defendant’s absence, Awomolo produced a medical report obtained by Onnoghen from the hospital where he was said to be receiving treatment.
The lead prosecution lawyer, Aliu Umar, who read the letter said he would concede to the report that the defendant had a medical challenge.
Aliu added that the content of the medical letter showed that Onnoghen was also battling a high blood pressure and that the CJN was ordered to remain on bed rest for the next 72 hours.
“In view of the medical report presented by the defendant and the fact that the request was conceded by the prosecution, the tribunal hereby adjourns matter till Monday, March 15 as requested by the prosecution,” said Mr Umar.
Onochie took to her social media page to criticize the CJN.
“Onnoghen absent from CCT over toothache, high blood pressure . Me: Ordinary Nigerians who have more than toothache & blood pressure come to courts to answer for their alleged crimes. Just take your pills and stop insulting our legal system. You were fine till now,” she tweeted.
