Nigerian politics has virtually taken over all areas of the country. It is very apparent that the politicians are busy making laws that are favourable to them and the masses are left to wallow in unemployment and poverty. It is no longer news that some states are still struggling to pay worker’s salaries. Workers are being owed for months. In the middle of this, some former State Governors who are currently serving as senators are still receiving pensions. Millions of naira are being transferred to their Bank accounts as pensions monthly without fail.
Hence, they are earning ‘double’ salary – as serving senators and as former Governors. The amount carted home monthly by Nigerian senators as salary and allowances is about N13 million. For some states, what the former Governors earn as pensions monthly is equivalent with the monthly salary of the sitting Governor. This is in addition to other extra incentives such as allowances, cars and houses. In politics in Nigeria, the basic salary of state Governors in Nigeria is about N2 million. We shall now highlight on the top 5 serving senators who are earning simultaneously as former Governors and serving senators. Our emphasis is on the top 5 earners only.
#1 Godswill Akpabio:
In Akwa Ibom, the state’s pension bill stipulates a life pension for former governors and deputy governors. The pension is equivalent with that of the incumbent Governor. It also includes special add-on benefits which are; two new official cars every four years and monthly allowances not exceeding N7 million every month to cater for personal aides, cooks and security guards. In Nigeria, the basic monthly salaries for sitting state governors is about N2 million. Hence, Senator Akpabio rakes in about N7 million monthly as pensions. Add this to his monthly salary as a senator ] is likely to earn at least N22 million monthly.
#2 Bukola Saraki
Dr. Bukola Saraki currently serves as the president of the Nigerian senate. He is another Nigerian senator who is currently earning double income as former Governor and as a serving Senator. The pension bill in kwara state allows Saraki to receive exactly the same amount as the incumbent Governor as pension, 300 percent of the pension as monthly allowance for personal aides and furniture and two brand new cars to be replaced every three years. In addition to this , he was also given a 5-bedroom duplex. Add all these to his basic take home pay of N13 million from the senate, then Saraki is likely to cart home at least N21 million naira monthly. He still earns more. As the senate president, he earns more than other senators.
#3 Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso
The Former Kano state Governor is entitled to be paid a monthly pension which is equivalent to that of the serving Governor. He is also entitled to five new cars to be replaced every three years. This is in addition to three houses one in kano and one in Abuja and one in a city of their choice. 200 percent of the monthly pension is given to him for allowances to cater for security and aides. A cumulation of these shows that Musa Kwankwaso earns a total of N19 million.
