Arewa youth forum - Quit notice: Arewa youths and Igbo leaders peace meeting hits deadend

The peace meeting between Arewa youths and Igbo leader in the North has hit a dead end following an adjournment of negotiations.

A 10-man committee, constituted by a coalition of northern groups and Igbo leaders in the North to address the quit notice given to the Igbo in the North, adjourned further deliberations till 10 days’ time to enable it to make more consultations.

The committee had been expected to take a stand on the quit notice at its meeting on Monday, but it was gathered that the committee found out new issues beyond what it set out to address.

A source, who was privy to the meeting, explained that, “We sat more than thrice and realised that there are more issues that need to be extensively deliberated upon, if we really want to find a permanent solution that will calm frayed nerves.”

The 10-man committee was constituted last week following a peace parley the coalition of northern groups had with the Igbo leaders in the North. The committee was mandated to amicably resolve the contentious quit notice given to the Igbo in the North by Arewa youths.

However, after three days of deliberation and brainstorming, the joint committee, with five representatives from each side, adjourned sitting to the next 10 days to give room for wider consultations.

In a statement issued at the end of its meeting, the committee said it needed more time to enable it to do a thorough job that would be acceptable to both sides.

The statement, which was signed by the representative of Igbo leaders, Chief Chi Nwogu, and the representative of the Coalition of Northern Groups, Alhaji Dauda Shamakiri and Isa Tijani, convener of the peace parley, read partly, “Reference to the peace meeting held on August 4, 2017 by leaders of the Coalition of Northern Groups and Igbo leaders in the 19 northern states and the FCT, which resulted in the formation of a 10-man committee to find an enduring solution to the quit notice issued by the Arewa youths. The committee sat and deliberated extensively and agreed that there is a need for further consultations from both sides.

“Accordingly, the meeting adjourned to reconvene in the next 10 days, where a final resolution on the contentious issues will be achieved.”
