The French police has begun operations to clear thousands of migrants from Calais ‘Jungle’, a french port city known to shelter immigrants.
According to french authorities, Calais holds around 6,500 migrants who are seeking to get to Britain. Over 1200 police officers have been engaged to help with the clearance process.
Migrants to be spread across refugee centers
On October 24, police began escorting the camp residents, mainly from Africa and the Middle East, on foot to a registration center in Calais.
They will be separated into adults, families, unaccompanied minors, and the vulnerable.They will then be assigned to 450 refugee centers across France where they can apply for asylum.
There are concerns that some migrants will refuse to go because they still want to get to Britain. Clashes reportedly broke out between some migrants and the French police which resulted in the use of teargas and the migrants fought back using stones. Photos below;
