Order for arrest of northern youths will cause unrest – Kwankwaso

John Saleh Aminu

Former defence minister, Rabiu Kwakwaso has condemned a call by some governors for the arrest of the northern youths that issued a quit notice to Igbos residing in Northern Nigeria. Kwakwaso cited reasons that the call was ‘unpatriotic’ and capable of causing ‘chaos’.

Mr Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano state, stated that detaining the young men would aggravate tensions. He, however, added that Igbos are bonafide citizens of Nigeria who were free to live in any part of the country. He added that dialogue was the only way to calm the already strayed nerves in the country’s ethnic makeup.

In his words;

“The general belief in the North is that we are better together as a country.  The unity and development of the country should be of paramount concern of every Nigerian,” he said. Kwankwaso blamed the tension over the pronouncement of the youths and the counter call by another group in the South on the weakness in the nation’s political order, accusing the elders of failing to call the youths to order. “Many people are afraid to call the youths to order.  If they are wrong, they are wrong,”

Kwankwaso, who currently serves as a senator representing Kano central district, praised the acting president, Yemi Osinbajo on his candour and manner of approaching the situation. he hailed him for holding meetings with leaders of thought from various regions of the country.
