An Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court, on Friday, granted a motorist, Mathew Balogun, one million naira bail for driving dangerously and causing the death of one Seun Ajibode.
Balogun, who resides at Elega Iya Sammy Imala House in Abeokuta, is facing a two-count charge of driving recklessly and driving vehicle on the highway without a driver’s licence.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Areola Adelaja, granted the defendant the bail with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case to Feb. 2, 2018 for hearing.
Earlier, the Police Prosecutor, Insp Sunday Eigbejiale, had told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Nov. 26 at about 9:30 p.m. at Lantoro junction along Ake road in Abeokuta.
Eigbejiale, said the defendant, a driver of Mitsubishi Canter marked KRD 372 XP, drove on the highway in a reckless and dangerous manner, which caused the death of the deceased.
“The deceased was on his motorcycle, driving home when the accused vehicle hit him and pushed his motorcycle over a distance of about 800 meters, thus leading to the death of the motorcyclist.
“At the time of his arrest, it was found that the defendant, who drove the vehicle on the public highway had no drivers’ license,’’ he said.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Sections 27 and 17(1) of the RTL Cap 548, Vol. 6, Laws of Ogun, 2004.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him.
