A 30-year-old driver, Anthony Otike, was on Friday brought before an Epe Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State for allegedly stealing his employer’s 5, 219 kg of cooking gas valued at N1.3 million.
The accused, whose address was not given, pleaded not guilty to the charge of stealing brought against him.
Police Sgt. Moses Oyekanmi, the Prosecutor, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on April 12 about 10.45 a.m. at Setana Gas Plant, Ogombo Road, Epe.
Oyekanmi said the company’s manager, Mr Charles Ikpeama, had during a visit to the plant discovered that the gas tank had become empty.
He told the court that the theft was confirmed when Ikpeama checked the sale records and discovered that only 4,761 kg of the 9,980 kg of gas supplied had been sold while the tank was empty.
“The driver had made an unauthorized supply trip and was discovered he had sold the stolen gas.”
The offence contravened Section 287 (7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 which prescribes a seven-year jail term for offenders.
The Magistrate, Mrs O.A. Fowowe-Erusiafe, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
She said the sureties must be gainfully employed with an evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government and adjourned the case until June 7.
