Alhaji Jansen Yasin, President, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), has advised the members to resist any ploy by politicians to use them as thugs during the 2019 general election.
Yasin gave the advice on Monday in Ilorin during the official presentation of 30 vehicles to the branch chairmen of the union in Kwara.
He said that while unscrupulous politicians sought to use members of the union for evil machination, they kept their own family members protected from such illicit activities.
The NURTW boss said that the era of using the transport union members as hit wing of certain political parties was over.
According to him, the union is now a professional organisation.
Yasin said the members reserved the right to belong to political parties of their choices and vote candidates they felt would represent them well during the election.
The NURTW urged the members to maintain discipline for which the union was already known and shun any conduct that could tarnish its image.
He also appealed to them to take advantage of the forthcoming general elections and vote credible candidates would cater and represent their interests at different levels.
“The 2019 election is around the corner. I’m calling on my members throughout the federation to make sure they get their voter cards so that they can elect a credible leader.
“At the same time, they should know that driving is a profession as any other in the world.
“By this, they should not allow anyone of them to be used as political thugs during the 2019 election.
“They should be law-abiding and avoid anything that can tarnish the image of this organisation”, Yasin said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the presentation was at the instance of Aliyu Ore, the Chairman of Kwara Council of the union.
The local officers also received N40 million, in addition.
The NURTW president described the event as a great moment in the annals of the council.
He said the event would be the second one when the Ore-led administration would be presenting cars to branch leaders.
Earlier, Ore said the council embarked on the gesture to encourage the branch chairmen and other executive members to always discharge their duties effectively.
The state chairman of the union recalled that 40 Peugeot 406 cars were distributed to the branch chairmen during his first tenure and promised to continue to prioritise welfare of members.
