Reps issue arrest warrant for EFCC boss, Ibrahim Magu

The Acting Chairman of the EFCC, Mr Ibrahim Magu, has been issued an arrest warrant by the Committee on Public Petitions in the House of Representatives for refusal to appear before it on Tuesday, on a petition by former first lady, Mrs Patience Jonathan.

The committee on its part agreed that Magu should be arrested and presented before it on the 7th of November 2017, after his failure to appear before the panel despite several invitations.

It will be recalled that Mrs Jonathan had some of her accounts frozen by some banks following an EFCC led investigation, but a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos ordered that all her bank accounts should be unfrozen.

Mrs Jonathan petitioned the EFCC, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, among others to the House of reps, alleging harassment from the agencies.

The committee in continuation of its sitting on the petition in Abuja, gave the EFCC Acting Boss up till October 4 to appear before it, lamented that the EFCC chairman was relaxed concerning the matter.

The committee, chaired by Rep UzomaNkem-Abonta (Abia-PDP), said the EFCC chairman had been invited with several letters to appear before it to shed light on the directive given by the commission to some banks to freeze the accounts of the former first lady.

Rep Kingsley Chindaa member of the committee, ( PDP-Rivers), moved a motion that a bench warrant be issued against EFCC Chairman to appear before the committee on the next adjourned date. The motion was supported by all members of the committee present at the sitting. The committee chairman ruled that a bench warrant be issued against Magu.

The committee also directed Mrs Jonathan’s legal team to work formalities with the management of Zenith Bank, Eco Bank, First Bank and Fidelity Bank to find solutions to the court order asking the banks to unfreeze her accounts. While Union Bank was discharged as it fully complied with an earlier directive to unfreeze Mrs Jonathan’s accounts.
