Bauchi Commissions Vocational College for Orphans and Vulnerable Kids

Gov. M. A. Abubakar, on Tuesday morning, commissioned the Amb. Mohammed Chadi Abubakar Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) Vocational College in Bauchi. The commissioning followed the unveiling of several special education centre intervention projects.

Speaking at the event, the executive Chairman of Bauchi State Orphans and Vulnerable Children Agency (BASOVCA), Ibraham Hali Abdullahi stated that the college is the first of its kind in the country. Stating that the welfare of the OVCs are taking care of, even daily meals. He thanked the Governor for supporting OVCs in the state and repositioning BASOVCA to take care of them. He also said that the Agency is gender sensitive as a similar college is near completion in Misau.

Also speaking at the event was the Emir of Bauchi, HRH Alh. (Dr.) Rilwanu Sulaiman Adamu. The Royal Father expressed his gratitude to God first, and to the state government. He said that Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVCs) are a collective responsibility of society. He praised the work done so far to alleviate the plight of OVCs but enjoined all that more needs to be done. He lauded Gov. Abubakar and BASOVCA for the initiative.

Governor Abubakar in his remarks said the college was named to immortalize the late Amb. M. C. Abubakar  for his service to the state. He stated that being an Orphan or Vulnerable Child (OVC) should not stop one from acquiring quality education, while stating that the current administration will continue its social empowerment drive especially in the areas of education, health, and social welfare. He thanked International donors who also played a role by paying counterpart funding when due. He also thanked the Board of BASOVCA for the achievements recorded in a short period.

Other projects commissioned asides the College include: 20 VIP toilets, 18 VIP Bathrooms, 1 Block of classrooms, 4 Blocks of renovated classrooms, and a well-equipped 160 capacity bed space hostel. Furthermore, over 20,000 OVCs will be registered by the administration under the National Health Insurance Scheme. BASOVCA also introduced the health ticketing system, where over 400 OVCs receives medical services from the state owned specialist hospital monthly.
