This weekend, I had the priviledge of launching the School Hall of Laurenstephens School, Lekki Lagos.

Sometime back in 2002/2003 while serving as the Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Lands Bureau, I was instrumental in assisting Mrs. Josephine Ndubuisi-Kanu, the Proprietress of the School to perfect the papers of the land where the school is now located. At the time it was not the most favourable location and certainly would the challenges of developing such a piece of land for educational purposes might have proven too challenging for anyone with profit as their only motive.

However, on my arrival at the school and seeing the development not only of the property, but also of the quality of education being received by the pupils, I decided to take this post out to commend the effort of the proprietress and the schools management board.

I seized the opportunity to encourage the students to pick up an activity or the other that will make the school hall an eternal part of their memory and to also use the hall as a spring board to bolster their confidence. I urged them to Capitalize on every opportunity they will ever have to debate, cast news, sing, dance or give a speech before their colleagues in the auditorium because they would never know when that courage to face a crowd will come in handy in the years ahead.

In concluding, conscious that our local languages are fast going extinct due to the lack of knowledge by the younger generation and as a way of encouraging private institutions to incorporate the teaching of Local Languages into their educational curriculum, I committed to instituting an award in the school for the best students in Local Language courses at the annual speech and price giving day of the school.

The lesson to be learnt here is that we must all commit to the improvement of the quality of education being imparted on the younger generations without focusing on just the profit while at the same time challenging our entrepreneurial spirits in everything we do, to succeed against all odds.
